Sludge is rich in nutrients such as organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that cause water pollution. It also contains a large number of pathogenic microorganisms, which are prone to decay and odor. Improper disposal can cause serious environmental pollution and ecological damage, as well as a great waste of resources. At present, the main methods of sludge disposal currently used domestically and internationally include landfill, composting, incineration, pyrolysis, etc. Landfill technology has low costs, but it occupies a large area, contains a lot of landfill gas and leachate, and is difficult to treat. Anaerobic digestion technology can recover energy substances, but its operation and management are difficult. The incineration technology has significant capacity reduction effects, and the calorific value of sludge can be utilized, but the operating cost is high and there is a problem of secondary air pollution. In recent years, pyrolysis has received increasing attention as an alternative technology for incineration.
